Guidance for Researchers
As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies continue to evolve, they offer new opportunities to support research activities, including data exploration and analysis as well as drafting, translation, and communication. At the University of Kansas, GenAI tools may be used to support research and scholarly activities when applied in ways that align with institutional values of collaboration, equity, excellence, integrity, and respect. This guidance is intended to help researchers consider appropriate uses of GenAI while maintaining high standards of ethical and responsible conduct.
Using Generative AI in Research
Researchers should exercise appropriate caution when using GenAI tools in research activities. In particular:
- Review and comply with funding agency, sponsor, and publisher policies related to AI use.
- Be attentive to how AI tools handle data, including confidentiality, privacy, and intellectual property considerations.
Consider whether the use of GenAI is appropriate for the research context, methodology, and disciplinary norms.
Research Integrity & Responsible Use
The use of AI-related tools or methods in research does not change core expectations related to research integrity and responsible conduct of research at KU.
Standards related to authorship and attribution, data management, transparency, ethical review, and academic honesty continue to apply when AI technologies are involved. Researchers are expected to:
- Understand and disclose relevant use of AI tools when required.
- Consider the limitations, assumptions, and potential impact of AI-enabled approaches.
- Follow applicable institutional policies, sponsor requirements, and disciplinary standards.
Responsible use of GenAI supports scholarly judgment, accountability, and ethical research practice.
